Using Student Work Protocols to Inform Instruction and Assessment

Teachers are accustomed to looking at student work to evaluate and grade it, but looking at it from a different angle can yield valuable insight into the learning that is (or is not!) occurring in their classes. In this seminar workshop, participants will use protocols to analyze various types of student output, then discuss how this practice can be used to make data-driven decisions and improve learning activities and assessments.

Course Objectives:

1. Use a student work analysis protocol to reflect on their practice and identify points for improvement in assessment and instruction

2. Identify attitudes and conditions necessary for making student work analysis a sustainable practice

3. Develop a plan for using a student work analysis protocol in their own context

4. Discuss how student work analysis can be used to enhance or support other practices such as formative assessment, action research, and professional learning communities
