Building Reader Resiliency: Why How We Read Matters
Reading is the cornerstone of literacy but what many people don’t realize is that it is not a natural process. It takes time and effort to learn how to read efficiently and for some students, it can be a frustrating process. That is why we need to build reader resilience. In this workshop, we will revisit a few key principles to help students become more strategic readers capable of drawing on their entire linguistic repertoire to negotiate meaning. We will also reflect a little more on what it means to struggle alongside a text and some strategies to help overcome it.
At the end of the training, participants should be able to:
1. Review and understand the key principles and concepts that can build reading resiliency among students;
2. Reflect on current teaching practice and choose one concrete action take-away or teaching idea that can be applied in one’s class
